Lewmar hatch closing seals (SH/RS/OC)

I'm going to deal with Superhatch (1982-87), Rollstop (1987-92) and Ocean (1992-current). The seals for Low Profile, Medium Profile and Coastline are still available from Lewmar through dealers (including us).

Superhatch

Lewmar stopped production some years ago, but (with support from Lewmar) we have the same seal manufactured in the UK for cutting to the appropriate length for use when refurbishing these hatches. The seal clips over the underside of the lid frame with the acrylic mounted on top (covering one of the tails). For this reason the seal should only be replaced when also replacing/resealing the acrylic. Please note that no other spares are available for this model.

Rollstop/Ocean

I group these as they use the same seal options, but we now have two versions.

Current (left) vs Original

Original seal - extruded EPDM

The original version is an extruded EPDM seal (very similar but not compatible with the Superhatch seal). This also clips over the underside of the lid and can only be installed when replacing/resealing the acrylic.

Current Seal - hollow EPDM foam with VHB tape

In 2023/24 Lewmar ceased production of the original seal and replaced it with the current hollow foam EPDM seal in single sided form including a VHB tape backing. This 'sticks' to the underside of the lid frame and can in theory be fitted without removing the acrylic. This is however far from a perfect solution as it tends to ruck in the corners, such that if the bonding tape were to fail the seal would peel away. It also requires the old seal to be carefully cut away, leaving the original tail under the acrylic. Though not marketed by Lewmar for use with Rollstop models there is no real reason why this would not work.

To be honest we don't like or recommend this new seal and took steps to have a replica of the original seal manufactured for use during our refurbishment work. This we believe is a better option as we've never had a hatch where the original seal has become unattached from the lid frame.

So we can supply the current seal, but would not recommend this over the original type. But, if not wanting to remove/replace the acrylic this remains an option for you.
